City of Snyder Municipal Water Report Info

The City of Snyder has a rich history dating back to 1878 when William Henry (Pete) Snyder, a Pennsylvania native and buffalo hunter, established a trading post along Deep Creek. This settlement quickly attracted other hunters, creating a community of buffalo hide dwellings that earned early nicknames like "Hide Town" and "Robber's Roost" due to its frontier character.

By 1882, Snyder had developed a formal town plan and welcomed new settlers. That same year saw the establishment of the first public school. When Scurry County was organized in 1884, Snyder was selected as the county seat, cementing its importance in the region.

The community remained primarily agricultural until a transformative event in 1948 - the discovery of oil on the Canyon Reef formation north of town. Within just one year, the population surged from approximately 4,000 to over 12,000 residents, with a temporary tent and trailer community emerging on the town's northern edge. The oil boom peaked around 1951, with the population reaching nearly 16,000 before stabilizing at about 11,000.

Scurry County became Texas's leading oil-producing region thanks to a locally developed method of injecting carbon dioxide into oil formations to increase pressure and enhance output. Meanwhile, agriculture and cotton farming continued to employ a significant portion of the population, maintaining the area's diverse economic base.
