Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or through soil, it naturally dissolves minerals and can sometimes pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals, which may occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil and gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may naturally occur or result from oil/gas production and mining operations

All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least trace amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

Secondary constituents (like calcium, sodium, or iron) can affect taste, color, and odor but aren't considered health hazards. These are regulated by Texas, not the EPA, and aren't required in this report despite their impact on water quality.

The City of Angleton uses purchased surface water from the Gulf Coast Aquifer and Brazos River. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is updating a Source Water Susceptibility Assessment that describes potential contaminant sources based on human activities and natural conditions. This information helps us develop better water protection strategies. Some assessment information is available at Texas Municipal Water Watch: http://dww.state.texas.us/DWW/.
