Regarding Lead in Tap Water: If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The utility is responsible for delivering high-quality water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components.

When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for cooking or consumption. If concerned about lead content, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction steps is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Vulnerable Populations: Some individuals may be more susceptible to water contaminants than the general public. People with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly, and infants—may face increased risk from infections. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers.

Water Fluoridation: Fluoride has been added to U.S. water supplies since 1945. Of the 50 largest cities in the U.S., 43 fluoridate their water. In December 2007, MWDSC joined many public water suppliers in adding fluoride to prevent tooth decay. Following recommendations from DDW and CDC, MWDSC adjusted fluoride levels in Colorado River and State Water Project supplies to the optimal range of 0.6 to 1.2 parts per million for dental health. Our local water is not supplemented with fluoride. State regulations limit fluoride to a maximum of 2 parts per million.
