About Us
Essential Information About Water Contaminants
Water sources including tap and bottled water come from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal and human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, and farming
- Pesticides and herbicides: From various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA and California Department of Drinking Water establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations and state laws also set limits for bottled water contaminants to provide the same public health protection.
All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
