History Of Oak Park
Louis Boyar was an innovative designer who built homes for defense workers in Southern California during World War II. Following the war, he formed a partnership with renowned developers S. Mark Taper and Ben Weinberg to establish a forward-thinking community south of Los Angeles.

For their initial venture, they acquired 3,375 acres of bean farmland with a $9 million loan. The trio then developed a new community with 17,500 homes, opening for sales in 1950. This community stands today as Lakewood, California – one of the pioneering model communities with pre-planned schools, shopping centers, parks, churches, businesses, and amenities.

Subsequently, Louis partnered with his brother Mark Boyar to create the Metropolitan Development Corporation (MDC), eventually becoming a publicly traded company. The Boyars utilized their community planning expertise for projects in the San Fernando Valley, including Valley Park, Valley Park Highlands, and Fallbrook Square Shopping Center.

Meanwhile, one of radio's most celebrated duos, Jim and Marian (Driscoll) Jordan – known worldwide as "Fibber McGee and Molly" – enjoyed successful broadcasting careers spanning decades. The Jordans purchased a substantial 2,600-acre ranch in Ventura County, north of Agoura, establishing their home just north of where Oak Park High School now stands. Tragically, their home was destroyed in a massive wildfire that swept through the region in 1970.

As developable land became scarce and property values increased, the Boyars and MDC expanded their development vision northward and westward. They acquired the Jordan ranch and created their newest planned community: "Oak Park."

What does the Water Department do?
We provide high-quality municipal water to approximately 7,000 customers in Warrick County through the operation and maintenance of our Water Treatment Facility, water storage tanks, and distribution network.

Where does our water come from?
Our water is extracted from wells that collect groundwater. For additional information about groundwater and groundwater quality in Indiana, please visit our resources page.

How do I report a water main break or leak?
During business hours (7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday), please call the Maintenance Facility at 812-925-6213; after-hours emergencies will be addressed by our on-call personnel at 812-483-1610.

How do I report a leaking/damaged fire hydrant?
During business hours (7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday), please call the Maintenance Facility at 812-925-6213; after-hours emergencies will be addressed by our on-call personnel at 812-483-1610.

How do I start or stop water service?
Services can be established or discontinued by contacting our Billing Office at 812-925-6882. Please provide at least one business day's notice for service requests. Requests received after 3:30 p.m. may be processed the following business day.

What is the purpose of water main flushing?
Flushing the water system by opening fire hydrants allows us to remove mineral buildup and sediment from our water mains and ensure water quality throughout the system. Routine flushing is recommended by Federal and State agencies that regulate municipal water quality. We typically conduct system flushing in April and October; the process usually takes two weeks and is announced in advance through local newspapers, business postings, and our website.

What can I expect during water main flushing?
Most customers will only be affected for one day during the two-week flushing period. We recommend minimizing water usage on flushing days (typically 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to avoid issues. If you must use water during this time, you might experience:

  • Temporarily reduced water pressure (usually lasting no more than a few hours)
  • Rust-colored water due to naturally-occurring iron sediment being disturbed
  • Possible hammering noises in pipes or cloudy water from air in the lines
To clear discolored water, run COLD water through your bathtub until it runs clear (up to 20 minutes). Avoid using hot water or water softeners until lines are cleared to prevent drawing discolored water into those systems.
