California Water Utility Companies

The City of Port Hueneme is dedicated to providing accurate information about your tap water safety. The State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) mandates that the City distribute an annual Customer Confidence Report (CCR) detailing water quality from the previous calendar year. The City conducts regular testing as required by SWRCB regulations with monthly result reviews. Additionally, yearly inspections of operational guidelines and procedures are conducted to ensure water safety.

This CCR summarizes the 2017 water quality test results performed by the City, United Water Conservation District (United), Port Hueneme Water Agency (PHWA), and Calleguas Municipal Water District (Calleguas). It includes information about water sources, content, and comparison to State standards. Test results are listed under appropriate water quality standards including maximum contaminant levels, federal maximum contaminant level goals, and California public health goals.

Water testing is routinely conducted for bacteria, protozoan, disinfectant residuals, minerals, radioactivity, inorganic and organic chemicals, and other quality parameters. Este informe contiene información importante sobre su agua potable. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien.

Calleguas receives water from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). MWD completed Source Water Assessments for both State Water Project and Colorado River supplies. The greatest risks to water quality are urban and stormwater runoff, increasing watershed urbanization, and sewage. The State Water assessment was updated in 2012 and the Colorado River supply in 2015. Source Water Assessment copies are available from MWD at 213-217-6850.

PHWA's treatment plant utilizes two state-of-the-art membrane filtration systems: reverse osmosis (RO) and nano-filtration (NF). These three units operate simultaneously, each producing 1-1.5 million gallons of water daily. The treatment process softens United's water by reducing mineral content and minimizes corrosiveness by adding sodium hydroxide. Water is disinfected using chloramines instead of chlorine for better taste, reduced odors, and lower trihalomethane formation.

Due to ongoing drought conditions in California, local groundwater has temporarily shown higher Iron and Manganese levels. Since these minerals clog sensitive membrane filters, PHWA temporarily suspended the reverse osmosis and nanofiltration units for much of 2017.

State water imported by MWD from the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California is conveyed through the State Water Project's network of reservoirs, aqueducts, and pumping stations. MWD filters and disinfects this water before Calleguas delivers it to Ventura County. At the PHWA treatment plant, state water is blended with treated United water before distribution. The blended water contains approximately 2.5 parts per million chloramines.

Fish owners should note: You must chemically remove chloramines from PHWA water when preparing aquarium water. Failure to remove chloramines can harm aquatic life.
