How is Carpinteria's water supply holding up? Currently, Lake Cachuma stands at 39% capacity and is expected to drop to 30% before winter precipitation can potentially replenish it. The Carpinteria groundwater basin has been significantly affected by years of extraction and minimal rainfall, resulting in levels well below sea level. This poses a long-term risk of saltwater intrusion into our freshwater resources.

While the State Water Project offers some relief in the coming years, it cannot fully compensate for shortages in other supplies indefinitely. Our immediate goal is to extend our current water resources as long as possible, giving nature more opportunities to replenish through winter storms.

This is where community action becomes crucial. Water conservation, both now and in the future, is essential for adapting to our semi-arid climate. We encourage all residents to help preserve Carpinteria's water supply by repairing leaks, taking shorter showers, and considering drought-tolerant landscaping options.

We extend our gratitude to all Carpinterians who have already made tremendous efforts to reduce water usage during this drought. For conservation tips and advice, please contact Conservation Specialist Rhonda Gutierrez at the District.
