About Us
SOURCES OF MUNICIPAL WATER (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from human and animal activities.
Contaminants potentially present in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals (naturally occurring or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, farming)
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, agricultural applications, and septic systems
To ensure tap water safety, the USEPA and State Water Resources Control Board - Division of Water (DDW) establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. These DDW regulations are designed to protect public health while maintaining water quality standards.
