About Us
The City of Westminster's water supply combines groundwater managed by Orange County Drinking water District (OCWD) with imported water from Northern California and the Colorado River. The imported water is purchased from MWDSC through Municipal Water Area of Orange Region (MWDOC), which distributes it to various water agencies throughout Orange County.
Westminster's groundwater comes from a natural underground aquifer that's replenished by Santa Ana River water, local rainfall, and imported supplies. This groundwater basin spans 350 square miles beneath northern and central Orange County, stretching from Irvine to the Los Angeles border and from Yorba Linda to the Pacific Ocean.
The city maintains 10 groundwater wells throughout Westminster and 3 import water connections. Typically, 75% of municipal water comes from local groundwater wells while 25% is imported from external sources.
Looking toward Orange County's water future, as statewide demands increase, careful management of this valuable resource becomes increasingly important. OCWD and MWDOC collaborate on innovative water management programs including recycling initiatives, habitat expansion, recharge facility construction, desalination projects, and efficiency programs to enhance long-term reliability and quality.
Westminster would consider future participation in Sea Water Desalination if program costs and water rates proved comparable to current groundwater or imported water pricing. Additional information from OCWD and MWDOC would be needed to determine how Westminster could integrate into the local delivery system for desalinated water.
