City of Santa Ana
About Us
This report provides detailed information about Santa Ana's water supply and the city's ongoing efforts to deliver high-quality municipal water year after year. Below are key details about our water system and operations.
Where does Santa Ana get its water?
The City of Santa Ana relies on two primary sources for the 12.5 billion gallons of water we supply annually:
- Groundwater (70%) - Accumulated beneath the earth's surface and pumped up through 20 city-owned wells
- Imported Water (30%) - Purchased from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which serves 26 member agencies across six counties
MWD sources water from the Colorado River via the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct and from Northern California through the 444-mile California Aqueduct. This water undergoes treatment at either the Diemer Filtration Plant in Yorba Linda or the Weymouth Water Treatment Plant in La Verne before delivery to Santa Ana through seven connection points. Most residents receive a blend of groundwater and imported water.
What's in my water?
Your tap water may contain various chemicals (both organic and inorganic), microscopic organisms (bacteria, algae, viruses), and radioactive materials, some naturally occurring. Health agencies require monitoring of these substances as they can affect health at certain levels.
Water quality standards
Health agencies establish maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) to ensure water safety and palatability. Some constituents have "TT" (Treatment Technique) requirements instead of numerical MCLs. Disinfectants like chlorine have MRDLs (maximum residual disinfection levels) to balance sanitation with safety. Turbidity measurements help monitor filtration effectiveness, with 95% of readings required to be below specific thresholds.
