About Us
Stuart, Florida is nestled along Florida's scenic East Coast, bordered by the St. Lucie River and west of the Indian Water. The city enjoys a pleasant climate year-round with mild winters and comfortable summers, averaging 72° annually with approximately 70.44 inches of rainfall.
Known as the "Sailfish Capital," Stuart offers diverse fishing opportunities including ocean, bay, and freshwater options. The North and South forks of the St. Lucie River provide tropical scenery perfect for boating enthusiasts. The downtown area features charming historic neighborhoods with a mix of urban homes and estates. Stuart's successful revitalization program has transformed the downtown into a vibrant district filled with boutique shops and restaurants.
Stuart was initially settled in 1870 and incorporated in 1914. Originally named Potsdam (1893-1896) after Otto Stypman's German hometown, he and his brother Ernest were among the area's first settlers and major landowners. They established pineapple farming operations in what is now downtown Stuart. The name changed when the FEC railroad arrived, honoring early settler Homer Hine Stuart, Jr.
Today, Stuart has a permanent population of 17,285, swelling to 21,087 during winter months. The city's tax rate is 4.75 mills, with major employers including Martin Memorial Hospital, Vought Aircraft, municipal government, and numerous small businesses. The economy thrives on retail, hospitality, construction and government sectors.
Stuart continues to grow through annexation north and south, currently covering 6.25 square miles. Revitalization efforts are ongoing in the Potsdam downtown section and north of the Roosevelt Bridge (completed 1996). The Evans Crary Bridge, recently finished by the Department of Transportation, connects to Stuart's public beaches.
The city government consists of a Mayor, Vice Mayor, and three Commissioners, with a city manager handling departmental administration. Stuart operates its own Water Department, sourcing from shallow wells with on-site treatment and testing. The city maintains paved roads with sidewalks, provides waste collection, and manages its own Police and Fire Departments.
Stuart features several large parks, smaller street-end recreational areas, and a Community Services Division organizing club meetings, youth activities, senior programs and entertainment. Flagler Park sits adjacent to City Hall on the St. Lucie River, and another passive park on the river's south bank offers a Riverwalk and public floating boat dock. Substances That Could Be in Water
The sources of municipal water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.
