About Us
The City of Talladega Water officials work diligently to protect your water quality, and we're pleased to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report. This document aims to inform you about the high-quality water and services we deliver daily. Our constant goal is providing you with safe, reliable water.
We want you to understand our ongoing efforts to improve water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. We remain committed to ensuring the quality of your water. This year's report (sometimes called the "Consumer Confidence Report") covers calendar year 2016 water quality testing and has been prepared in accordance with all relevant State and Federal regulations.
Following the Safe Municipal Water Act, the City of Talladega Water & Sewer Department monitors over 100 compounds in your water supply. This report includes a comprehensive list of all these compounds, whether they were actually detected or not.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) establish municipal water quality standards. To ensure your tap water is safe to drink, these agencies prescribe regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems.
Sources of Supply & Water Treatment Techniques
The City of Talladega Water & Sewer Department draws water from a combination of groundwater (four active wells) and surface water from our Surface Water Treatment Plant. The wells tap into the Rome and Knox Aquifers, providing approximately 80% of our total supply. This groundwater undergoes chlorination for disinfection, with fluoride added for dental health benefits.
The remaining 20% comes from our Surface Water Treatment Plant, which draws raw water from a reservoir created by a dam built on Talladega Creek around 1923. The treatment process includes adding lime and liquid alum for coagulation, followed by chlorination for disinfection and algae control. Water then undergoes sedimentation and filtration through sand and gravel media beds, followed by additional chlorination. Finally, caustic soda is added for pH adjustment and corrosion control, along with fluoride.
Our combined capacity exceeds 8 million gallons daily, though average usage is approximately 4 million gallons per day. A Source Water Assessment Plan has been completed for all sources and is available for review at our office at 100 North Court Street.
