Where does our water originate? Camden Water Utilities obtains water from the Ouachita River. This river begins in the Ouachita Mountains and flows eastward into Lake Ouachita. It continues through Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine before flowing freely through much of Arkansas. South of Lake Catherine, the river curves near Malvern and Arkadelphia, collecting water from the Caddo and Missouri Rivers before continuing to Camden.

The Ouachita River was named after the Ouachita Tribe, one of several indigenous tribes who lived along its banks. Other tribes included the Caddo, Osage Nation, Tensa, Chickasaw and Choctaw. "Washita" (Ouachita) translates to "good hunting grounds" and "sparkling silver water" in native languages. The river stretches 605 miles, ranking as the 25th longest in the United States.

Is our water fluoridated? YES - During the 2010 legislative session, Act 197 (legislation requiring water systems to maintain fluoride levels to prevent tooth decay) was enacted, mandating Camden Water Utilities to continue adding fluoride to public water. The target optimal level is 0.7 mg/l or parts per million.

Why is my water discolored? Is it safe? YES - We recommend reporting discolored water as it may indicate damaged infrastructure requiring attention. Typically, discoloration results from flow disturbances related to maintenance, unusual high usage, or hydrant operations that dislodge mineral buildup (particularly iron) from pipe walls. These accumulated particles are flushed during our annual system maintenance in mid-March. Though discolored, the water remains safely disinfected but may stain laundry. We advise waiting until water clears before washing clothes. Camden Water Utilities is implementing a 20-year infrastructure plan addressing the oldest pipes causing most discoloration issues.

When is my bill due? Water bills are mailed the last working day of each month and are due upon receipt. You have until the 15th to pay without late fees. If unpaid by your next billing cycle, a disconnection notice appears on your bill, with service subject to disconnection three days after this notice if the balance remains unpaid.

When is my bank draft processed? Customers using our Free Bank Draft Service can expect account charges on the 12th monthly. You'll still receive a bill marked "paid by bank draft." To enroll in this free service, download the form from our website and follow the instructions provided.
