City of The Colony
About Us
The City of The Colony maintains and regularly tests our municipal water supply for quality and safety. Our water is meticulously regulated to ensure it meets all standards established by environmental authorities.
The water we provide comes from several sources. Our primary supply includes five city-owned wells producing up to 9 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) from the Trinity Sands Aquifer (four wells) and Paluxy Aquifer (one well). We also purchase up to 6 MGD of treated surface water from Dallas Water Utilities, sourced from reservoirs including Lake Lewisville, Lake Ray Roberts, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Tawakoni, and Lake Fork.
For residents in the Austin Ranch area (south of Highway 121 and east of the MYCKET Railroad line), we purchase up to 4 MGD from the City of Plano, which receives its water from North Texas Municipal Water District reservoirs: Lake Lavon, Lake Jim Chapman, and Lake Texoma.
Our state-licensed operators continuously monitor water quality throughout our distribution system according to federal and state regulations. In our most recent water loss audit, The Colony's system reported approximately 11.8% loss of system input volume - a figure we're actively working to improve.
If you have questions about water quality, contaminants, or lead exposure (which can particularly affect pregnant women and young children), please contact our office. We recommend flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting in pipes to minimize potential lead exposure.
Remember that all water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk, as the EPA establishes limits to ensure public safety. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, please call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

City of The Colony Drinking Water Company and EPACity of The Colony Municipal Water Report Information
The Colony has a rich historical background tied to the Peters Colony, which was the primary and most successful empresario contract authorized by the Republic of Texas legislature to promote settlement in North Texas. This contract, effective from 1841 to 1848, gave settlers up to 640 acres of free land in exchange for building a cabin, cultivating 15 acres, and pledging allegiance to the Republic of Texas.
The modern City of The Colony developed in the 1970s when Fox and Jacobs purchased approximately 2,500 acres on Lake Lewisville's eastern shore. The name "The Colony" was chosen to honor the spirit of the original Peters Colony settlers. The first families moved into homes in October 1974, and by January 1977, the community had grown to over 3,500 residents and incorporated as a city.
Today, The Colony's municipal water system faces several challenges. Water quality testing has identified potential contaminants including Paraquat (an herbicide), 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene (an industrial solvent), Molybdenum (a naturally occurring metal), and various bacteria and viruses. These substances can impact both health and household plumbing systems.
Water hardness is another significant concern for residents, potentially causing scale buildup in pipes, reduced appliance efficiency, and increased soap usage. The city continues to monitor these issues and implement treatment protocols to ensure safe drinking water for all residents.
