About Us
In compliance with federal Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, the City of Walhalla Water System provides this annual water quality report to our customers. This document outlines your water source, its components, and how it compares to EPA and State regulations.
Our commitment is to keep you informed, as educated customers are our greatest allies. For additional water information, contact Martin Parris at City Hall: 864-638-4343.
Does Our Water Meet EPA Standards?
Yes, our water meets or exceeds all EPA requirements. In 2013, we or SCDHEC conducted over 15,000 tests across 55 potential contaminants.
Where Does My Water Come From?
Your water originates from several Coneross Creek tributaries in Sumter National Forest west of Walhalla. These include Yellow Branch Falls (upstream of Lake Jemike), White Fork Branch (upstream of Coneross Creek Reservoir), and areas along Poor, Buzzard Roost, and Hurricane Mountains.
At our treatment facility, we add Ferric Chloride and calcium at the flocculation point, plus additional lime for pH adjustment, chlorine for disinfection, fluoride for dental health, and phosphate to prevent corrosion in distribution pipes.
Our Source Water Assessment Plan is available for review at City Hall or online at http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/water/docs/Oconeswp/3710004s.pdf.
How Can I Get Involved?
Our Water Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm at Walhalla City Hall. Council meetings are held the third Tuesday monthly at 5:30 pm. The public is welcome to attend.
Should I Take Special Precautions?
Immuno-compromised individuals (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, some elderly persons, and infants) may be particularly vulnerable to infections. These people should consult their healthcare providers about drinking water safety. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Why Are There Contaminants in My Water?
All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
