Cleveland Public Water System
About Us
Cleveland Public Water System ranks among the largest municipal water networks in the United States. We process and distribute approximately 300 million gallons of water daily to over 1.4 million residents and thousands of businesses, educational institutions, and community centers across 80 communities in Cuyahoga County and neighboring areas.
Customer health and safety remain our primary concern. We employ cutting-edge monitoring equipment and technology to ensure our system delivers clean, great-tasting water. Our team continuously monitors more than 20,000 points throughout the water treatment process to verify all four of our plants operate properly.
Our quality assurance program includes:
- Collecting over 350 samples monthly from our distribution network
- Performing more than 160,000 tests annually to ensure proper treatment and disinfection
- Monitoring Lake Erie source water through strategically placed sensors on buoys
- Testing lake water before it enters our treatment facilities
- Analyzing water after each treatment stage
- Chemical analysis and taste-testing of finished water before distribution
Cleveland Water met or exceeded all treated water standards in 2017, though we hold ourselves to even higher benchmarks. Each of our treatment plants has achieved advanced certification in the national Partnership for Safe Water program – a voluntary initiative between six water organizations and over 200 water utilities aimed at enhancing public health safety beyond existing regulations.
We're also investing in infrastructure improvements. Following the recent modernization of our four treatment plants, we allocate $26 million annually to replace distribution mains. Our comprehensive Capital Improvement Program prioritizes infrastructure updates to ensure we can meet customer water needs well into the next century.
