About Us
The Clinton Water Department is committed to providing residents with high-quality water service and transparent information about water quality. This overview highlights where your water comes from, its quality standards, and how our treatment processes work to protect public health.
Clinton receives all its water from the Wachusett Reservoir under an 1898 agreement that provides the town with 800 million gallons annually. In exchange, a portion of the town was flooded to create this vital reservoir. The town has managed water treatment and distribution since public water service began in Clinton in 1882.
Water Treatment Process:
- Disinfection to eliminate harmful bacteria
- Corrosion control to minimize lead and copper exposure
- Filtration to remove particles and organisms
- Chemical treatment to maintain optimal pH, alkalinity, and taste
Advanced filtration was implemented in January 2006 to remove potentially harmful pathogens. While all water (including bottled varieties) naturally contains some contaminants, their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Source Water Information:
Our water originates from the Wachusett Reservoir watershed. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has prepared a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for the Wachusett Reservoir, noting potential contamination risks including wildlife, agricultural activities, transportation corridors, utility lines, and residential land use.
System Improvements:
We continuously upgrade our water infrastructure. The replacement of aging water mains is ongoing, with recent installations on Franklin Road completed in 2016. A town-wide Water Meter Replacement project began in Spring 2014, installing new meters and radio scan units for more efficient readings.
Lead and Copper Testing:
In 2016, Clinton Water System met all DEP requirements for lead and copper testing. Due to our excellent compliance record, the DEP reduced our sampling schedule from 60 samples yearly to 30 samples every third year. For households concerned about lead exposure, running water for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after long periods of non-use can help reduce potential exposure.
The Clinton Water Department encourages community involvement in water protection through initiatives like storm drain stenciling and proper waste oil disposal. Clinton began as the Mill District of Lancaster before establishing its own identity. In 1828, the Bigelow brothers, Erastus and Horatio, initiated an industrial revolution that permanently shaped Clinton's development. Erastus, a mechanical genius, invented the power loom for manufacturing coachlace, counterpane fabrics, and gingham plaids. Working alongside his brother Horatio, a marketing entrepreneur, they established a strong foothold in the textile industry.
By 1848, exceptional growth in population and industry prompted local leaders to separate from Lancaster. After two years of negotiations, the Town of Clinton was officially incorporated on March 14, 1850. The Bigelows' innovations continued with the development of the carpet loom, producing superior quality carpets found in prestigious establishments including the White House, the Waldorf-Astoria, and even the ill-fated SS TITANIC.
Clinton's industrial prominence began to decline during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Like many New England mill towns, businesses closed or relocated. Fortunately, the abundant mill buildings were rediscovered during the 1970s and 1980s by modern entrepreneurs, and many successful businesses now thrive in these historic spaces.
