About Us
Covington Water District is proud to present our annual Water Quality Report. This document summarizes the water quality testing conducted from January through December 2017. The results demonstrate that Covington Water District delivers safe, potable water that meets or exceeds all federal and state regulatory requirements.
If you have questions about this report, please contact Glenn Stockman, Water Quality Lead at 253-867-0944 or Glenn.stockman@covingtonwater.com.
Our Water Sources
The District's primary water comes from the Green River in south King County. The Green River Watershed spans 231 square miles of forested area that collects melting snow and seasonal rainfall in an uninhabited section of the Cascade Mountains between Chinook and Snoqualmie passes.
Tacoma Water owns 11 percent of the watershed land along the river and maintains agreements with other landowners to limit access and carefully regulate all activities including recreation, road maintenance, and logging. Tacoma also operates seven wells on the North Fork of the Green River, drawing from these sources when Green River water is unavailable due to high turbidity.
Community Collaboration
In 2015, the Regional Water Supply System's Green River Water Supply Filtration Facility became operational. This facility can process up to 150 million gallons of water daily, providing filtered surface water with significant improvements including:
- Protection against contaminants like giardia and cryptosporidium
- Enhanced taste, odor, and appearance
- Reduced silt and sand in the water system
- Lower levels of natural organic materials, decreasing disinfection byproducts
