The Public Utilities Division is responsible for operating and maintaining Danbury's Water Division infrastructure, sanitary sewer system, water supply dams, a closed landfill, gas collection system, and managing recycling and solid waste disposal programs. They also maintain most of the City's vehicle fleet, including all Police Department patrol vehicles.
The Division oversees contract operations for the City's Water Pollution Control Plant through an agreement with Veolia Water North America. Additionally, they supervise a public yard waste management facility on Plumtrees Road operated by Total Landscaping and Tree Service.
Public Utilities employs 37 staff members, including administrative personnel, utility maintenance workers, water treatment specialists, quality technicians, and equipment maintenance staff.
The Danbury Water Division focuses on providing customers with adequate quantities of quality water that meets or exceeds public health standards while ensuring sufficient flow for fire protection. The system produces approximately 6.5 million gallons daily through management of 8 reservoirs, 1 well site, 2 treatment plants, 14 pump stations, 9 storage tanks, 200 miles of water pipe and 2100 hydrants. Water quality is monitored continuously by operators and through approximately 27,000 annual tests. The system serves about 65,000 residents through 11,000 metered connections.
The Sewer Division ensures safe disposal and treatment of wastewater to protect human health and the environment. The Water Pollution Control Plant serves Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Ridgefield, and Newtown, processing about 9 million gallons of wastewater daily and 10 million gallons of septage annually. The sanitary collection system includes 20 pump stations, 164 miles of sewer line, and 4,500 vents.
Recent improvements include nitrogen and phosphorus removal systems that have resulted in cost savings of approximately $1 million and compliance with stringent discharge permits. Infrastructure upgrades include the Oakland Avenue Sewer Replacement Project and new equipment at the treatment plant.
The Recycling and Solid Waste Division provides environmentally sound waste management options for residents, including yard waste processing, household hazardous waste collection events, and an E-Waste recycling program at the Winters Brothers site. The Division also operates the Landfill Gas Collection facility in compliance with regulatory standards under a DEEP Stewardship Permit.
