About Us
Where Does My Water Come From and How is it Treated?
Our municipal water is sourced from a network of 24 deep wells (exceeding 200 feet in depth) that access the Floridan Aquifer. This substantial groundwater resource extends from South Carolina through Volusia County and much of Florida. While naturally high in quality, this water contains dissolved minerals and organic compounds that are actually beneficial for health.
At the Ralph Brennan Plant, we process this water through ozonation, softening, filtration, and chloramine disinfection. We add a corrosion inhibitor to protect your household plumbing and supplement the natural fluoride to levels recommended by the American Dental Health Association.
Important Health Information:
Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than others. People with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants—should seek advice from healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption. The EPA/CDC provides guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
All municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Lead Awareness:
Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water typically comes from service lines and home plumbing materials, not the water supply itself. After water sits in pipes for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. If concerned, consider water testing. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.Epa.Gov/safewater/lead.

Notable visitors have been flocking to the Greater Daytona Beach area for centuries, leaving lasting contributions for all to enjoy. Explorer Ponce de Leon discovered what's now known as DeLeon Springs during his famous 1513 quest for the Fountain of Youth. Dr. Andrew Turnbull established the New Smyrna settlement on 101,000 acres just south of Daytona Beach. Wealthy northern industrialist Matthias Day, so enchanted with the region, became Daytona's founding father and constructed its first hotel in 1874. Henry DeLand founded the world-renowned Stetson University in 1883 in the nearby city bearing his name.
Many entrepreneurs brought vision and commerce to the community. Philanthropist John D. Rockefeller discovered Ormond Beach's perfect golf courses and established his winter residence at The Casements. Civil rights pioneer Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune overcame tremendous obstacles to establish what's now Bethune-Cookman University in 1904. Bill France founded NASCAR in 1948 and constructed the World Center of Racing, Daytona International Speedway, in 1959.
Today, over 10 million visitors annually experience Daytona Beach's many treasures. The area's historical significance extends to civil rights—on March 17, 1946, Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated spring training baseball game with the Montreal Royals before becoming the first African-American in Major League Baseball. His legacy lives on through a stadium bearing his name and a life-sized statue at its entrance.
Auto racing became a popular pastime on the hard-packed beaches in the early 20th century, with Ormond Beach known as the "birthplace of speed" due to numerous land speed records. Motorsports advanced significantly with the 1959 opening of Daytona International Speedway, which continues thrilling racing enthusiasts annually.
For deeper historical insights, visitors should explore the Halifax Historical Museum in downtown Daytona Beach.
