Historical Background
Approximately 12,000 years ago, the first humans arrived in Florida. These descendants of ancient Asian migrants who crossed the land bridge became known as Indians. They hunted along the Halifax and Tomoka Rivers, leaving behind shell mounds containing oyster and clam remains. Archaeologists have discovered broken pottery, arrowheads, spear points and various artifacts in these areas. During this early period, the Halifax River may have existed as a shallow, clear-water stream.

Timucuan Heritage
The Timucuan Indians established settlements in this region during the early 1500s. They were one of six major tribes inhabiting Florida when Spanish explorers first arrived. Local Timucuan communities built fortified villages along the Tomoka and Halifax Rivers. French explorer Jacques LeMoyne documented their culture through detailed diaries and illustrations, describing physically fit, skilled craftspeople who excelled in weaponry, pottery, jewelry, and clothing made from deerskin and moss. The Timucuans valued physical fitness, organized communal games, and were accomplished fishermen, hunters and warriors.

African-American Communities
Between the 1880s and 1900s, the African-American community near Tomoka Road and White Street adopted the name "Liberia," honoring the first independent African nation established in 1821 by freed American slaves. Post-Civil War settlers from Liberia established this community. Another nearby area extending north to present-day Dix Avenue, west to Seldon Avenue and east to Lincoln Avenue became known as "Sudan," named after the African country. Today, Granada Boulevard marks the boundary between these historic founding communities, whose names are still affectionately used by residents, preserving an important aspect of Ormond Beach's diverse heritage.
