About Us
Have you wondered where Palm Coast's water comes from and how rainfall affects our supply? The City maintains over 60 production wells that draw groundwater from two key sources: the Confined Surficial Aquifer (northern area) and the deeper Upper Floridan Aquifer (southern region).
Palm Coast Utility works diligently with state agencies, particularly the St. Johns River Water Management District, to balance current water needs while preserving future supply. Since we don't have large underground rivers, our water supply depends on local recharge. This means capturing rainfall so it can percolate into the ground and replenish our aquifers.
Our drainage infrastructure of swales, ditches, and canals is specifically designed to collect rainwater and allow it to seep back into the ground. Wetland habitats also play a crucial role in aquifer recharge. Additionally, spraying highly treated reclaimed water on our turf helps replenish groundwater supplies.
The City recently completed a significant reclaimed water project along U.S. 1 south of Matanzas Woods Parkway. In this area, we have eight wells where treated wastewater from our treatment facilities is used to recharge the aquifer.
Despite our extensive well system and recharge strategies, Florida's water supply remains heavily weather-dependent. 2017 illustrated this with extreme conditions: severe spring drought, summer downpours, Hurricane Irma, and several nor'easters bringing excessive fall precipitation. While our average annual rainfall is about 55 inches, 2017 saw 84.37 inches with only 12.32 inches during the first five months. The aquifer reached dangerously low levels during drought but recovered with summer and fall rains.
Our primary goal is delivering high-quality water! Palm Coast Utility operates three water treatment plants and carefully manages this essential resource for current residents and future growth. Last year, we added five new wells to our southern wellfield and completed an Aquifer Performance Test with initial modeling for long-term planning, including potential brackish water treatment. We're finalizing a Water Supply Facilities Work Plan through 2035 and investigating whether surface water from freshwater channels could supplement our supply.
