About Us
We are proud to present this year's Annual Water Quality Report. This document is mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and serves as a comprehensive guide about the quality of water we deliver to your home daily.
Our primary mission is to provide safe, reliable water supplies. We want to highlight our ongoing efforts to enhance water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. Our commitment to ensuring excellent water quality remains unwavering.
Destin Water Users obtains water from six coastal wells drawing from the Floridan Aquifer and purchases additional water from South Walton Utility Company. Due to the exceptional natural quality of our water, minimal treatment is required - only chlorine and/or sodium hypochlorite for disinfection purposes.
We continuously monitor for contaminants according to Federal and State regulations. This report primarily reflects results from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017, though some earlier data is included as required by regulations.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants include:
• Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage plants, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater, oil/gas production
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
• Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or mining/oil production
The EPA establishes guidelines limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
