About Us
We're pleased to present the latest Municipal Water Quality Report for Dothan, Alabama. This publication provides essential information about your water quality and services delivered during the previous year, conforming with state and federal regulations that require water utilities to inform customers annually.
Our Water Source
Groundwater is our exclusive source of potable water, drawn from both shallow and deep wells. Depending on location and depth, Dothan's water comes from various formations including Lisbon, Tallahatta, Hatchetigbee, Tuscahoma Sand, Nanafalia, Salt Mountain Limestone, Clayton, and Providence Sand. Our 33 wells (with 32 million gallons daily capacity) provide an average of 12.6 million gallons daily to residents and businesses.
Water Quality Protection
Dothan Utilities maintains a comprehensive "Source Water Assessment Plan" detailing well locations, protection zones, groundwater data, and potential contamination sources. This plan, developed with assistance from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), was last updated in 2014. The most significant potential contamination sources identified include agricultural fields and private wells in our service area.
Treatment Process
Raw water undergoes specific treatment before distribution:
- Chlorine addition to protect against bacterial contamination
- Fluoride supplementation to help prevent dental disease
- Phosphate treatment to reduce red water issues and minimize metal pipe leaching
Water Quality Monitoring
Our system continuously monitors for contaminants according to federal and state regulations. Testing results show that Dothan's municipal water meets or exceeds all government standards for drinking water safety. While all water (including bottled) may contain trace amounts of some substances, the presence of these elements doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Special Notice for Vulnerable Populations
Some individuals may be more susceptible to contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants may face higher risks. These individuals should consult their healthcare providers about appropriate precautions.
Lead Information
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. While Dothan Utilities provides high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in household plumbing. When water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking.
Dothan Utilities is committed to providing quality water to every customer. For questions about this report or our water utility, please contact us at 334-615-3200 or email DothanUtilities@dothan.org.
