Enterprise Water Works

The primary mission of Enterprise Water Works is to deliver safe, reliable tap water to our community. We continuously strive to enhance our treatment processes and protect our vital water resources for future generations.

Enterprise Water Works utilizes groundwater from 17 strategically located wells that tap into the Nanafalia, Salt Mountain Limestone, Charity and Clayton Aquifers. These wells are positioned throughout the city, either within or near city boundaries. The Clintonville area receives water purchased from New Brockton Water and Sewer Board, primarily sourced from groundwater wells in the Clayton Aquifer.

All water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, residents can contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Our water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. Water can also pick up substances from animal presence or human activity, including microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife.

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.

We welcome community participation in Water Board meetings held at City Hall (501 S Main Street) on the second Wednesday monthly at 12:00 PM. Any schedule changes will be posted at City Hall in advance. The Water Board includes William Cooper, Sr. (Chairman), John T. Mitchell, Jr., and Ben Beckham, Jr., with Mayor Kenneth Boswell serving as Superintendent.

Individuals with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly persons, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to water contaminants. These individuals should seek medical advice about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Concerning lead exposure, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While Enterprise Water Works provides high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in household plumbing components. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking if it has been sitting for several hours. What if my water seems cloudy or discolored?

From one faucet only: If issues appear at just one faucet, the problem likely relates to your building's plumbing, not the municipal supply.

From hot water tap only: Your water heater may require maintenance. Check the owner's manual or consult a plumber. Avoid using hot tap water for drinking or cooking, as water heaters contain metal components that corrode over time, releasing metals into the hot water.

From multiple taps (both hot and cold): When discoloration affects multiple faucets, it may indicate internal plumbing corrosion or an issue with the municipal supply. Run cold water for several minutes to flush the lines, reducing the risk of drawing discolored water into your hot water tank. If water doesn't clear, contact Enterprise Water Department.

What if my water contains black particles?

At one faucet: Black particles typically come from deteriorating washers or corroded plumbing. Run water for several minutes and clean any screens or aerators. If problems persist, consult a plumber.

In toilet bowl water: Black particles often result from deteriorating toilet tank components, especially if you use automatic bowl cleaners. Replace the float or consult a plumber.

From hot water taps only: Particles originating only in hot water indicate issues with your water heater, not the municipal supply. Follow manufacturer's maintenance recommendations.

In cold water from all taps: Black particles affecting all cold water taps likely originate in the water main, possibly disturbed by hydrant use during fires, construction activity, or improper hydrant operation. Contact Enterprise Water Department, who will flush the main through a hydrant until clear. Afterward, run cold water throughout your building and clean tap screens.

What if my water has white/gray particles?

Floating particles: Floating white/gray particles typically indicate a deteriorating dip tube in your water heater. Some heaters use polypropylene or PVC tubes that break down over time. Consult a plumber and regularly clean faucet screens.

Sinking particles: White/gray particles that sink are likely calcium carbonate deposits. Your water heater may need routine maintenance. Clean faucet screens regularly and contact Enterprise Water Department if particles persist.

What about pink growth on bathroom fixtures?

Pink growth or staining comes from Serratia marcescens bacteria or mold present in the air. These organisms thrive in warm, humid environments like showers and baths, feeding on nutrients in water and on surfaces like rubber and plastic gaskets. Regular cleaning with bleach or mold-removing products will eliminate growth. Wipe away standing water to prevent recurrence.

What if my water appears rusty or discolored?

At one tap: Rust-colored, yellow, or brown water at a single tap indicates corrosion in your internal plumbing, not the municipal supply. Contact a plumber.

At all taps: Discoloration at all taps suggests issues in the water main feeding your building. Run cold water taps for 5-10 minutes until clear. If problems continue, call Enterprise Water Department. Avoid washing laundry, especially white items, until water clears. For rust stains on clothing, try products like "Iron-out" (found in laundry sections) rather than bleach. For persistent issues, contact the Enterprise Water Department.
