Elizabethton Water Department

The City of Elizabethton produces its potable water from three regional springs: Hampton, Valley Forge, and Big Springs. The areas surrounding these springs are designated as wellhead protection zones.

We encourage all Carter County residents to understand that ground water contaminants are prohibited in these zones. Potential contamination sources include excessive lawn fertilizers, garden pesticides, oil leaks, paint products, soil erosion in large uncovered areas, and animal overgrazing.

Water Conservation Tips

We encourage wise water usage even when supplies are plentiful. The average American uses approximately 150 gallons daily, but you can reduce consumption by up to 25% with simple steps that conserve this natural resource and save money:

1. Report significant water losses (broken pipes, open hydrants, malfunctioning sprinklers) to property owners or local authorities
2. Encourage neighbors to join in water conservation efforts
3. Practice conservation everywhere, even when someone else pays the bill
4. Raise lawnmower blades to at least 3 inches to promote deeper root growth and moisture retention
5. Water lawns during early morning when temperatures and wind are lowest to reduce evaporation
6. Only run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads
7. Consider commercial car washes that recycle water, or use a hose with automatic shutoff when washing at home
8. Use timers to prevent unattended sprinklers from wasting water
9. Install water-saving nozzles on hoses to control usage
10. Limit showers to five minutes and turn off water while brushing teeth
