About Us
Lakes, reservoirs, streams, springs, and wells serve as sources for both tap and bottled water. As water travels across land surfaces or permeates through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive substances, while also collecting materials from animal presence and human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff and residential uses
- Pesticides and herbicides from sources like agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and household or industrial wastewater
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that may naturally occur or result from oil/gas production and mining operations
To ensure public safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water. All water sources, including bottled options, may contain minimal amounts of some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

The Elmwood Park Water Department operates from 7418 West Fullerton Avenue. The pump house functions continuously, 24 hours daily. The municipality obtains water from Chicago, storing it in a two-million-gallon reservoir. During hot weather, the Water Department may distribute up to 4,000,000 gallons within a 24-hour period through four synchronized pumps working in different capacities to meet community needs.
The water storage facility beneath Fullerton Skate Park undergoes regular inspection and testing. Liquid Engineering, specialists in potable water tank assessment and maintenance, conducts annual inspections using specialized diving equipment with integrated microphones and cameras. The collected data transmits to a monitoring vehicle where it's recorded and analyzed. Any necessary maintenance issues identified during inspection are promptly addressed.
The Water Department maintains a 350-kilowatt diesel generator for emergency power outages. During storms, if power fails, this generator activates automatically and can operate continuously with refueling possible during operation. The generator follows a regular maintenance schedule to ensure reliability.
The facility uses a Hexagram system, which offers improved accuracy over traditional dial systems. This technology allows the Village to provide enhanced service by eliminating dependence on external meter readers. The new meters feature no external dials but connect to an MTU (meter transmission unit) with a 20-year battery life. A data collection unit (DCU) gathers household or business water usage information and transmits it directly to Village Hall. The Hexagram system measures usage in gallons for improved precision.
