Cryptosporidium is a microscopic pathogen found in surface water throughout the United States. While filtration removes cryptosporidium, even the most advanced filtration systems cannot guarantee complete elimination. Our monitoring has detected these organisms in our source water. Current testing methods cannot determine if the organisms are viable or capable of causing illness.

Consuming Cryptosporidium may cause cryptosporidiosis, an intestinal infection characterized by nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Most healthy individuals recover within weeks, but immunocompromised people face higher risks of severe illness. We recommend that vulnerable individuals consult healthcare providers about appropriate precautions. Cryptosporidium must be ingested to cause disease and can spread through means beyond tap water.

Important Health Information: Certain populations may be more susceptible to contaminants in municipal water than others. Immunocompromised individuals, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. Lead in Municipal Water: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from service line components and household plumbing. While the Town of Front Royal provides quality municipal water, we cannot control materials used in plumbing fixtures. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes when water has been sitting for several hours before using it for consumption.
