About Us
Chesapeake enjoys the advantage of two water treatment facilities and agreements to purchase treated municipal water from Norfolk and Portsmouth. Additional supply comes from well sources utilized during peak demand periods.
The Northwest Lake Water Treatment Plant processes up to 20 million gallons daily (MGD) from the Southwest River and brackish groundwater from four wells. This facility employs both conventional treatment methods (coagulation, sedimentation, filtration) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology. This source typically serves customers south of Aide Road, though distribution may adjust based on consumption patterns.
In April 2006, the Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant (LGWTP) was commissioned, providing 8 MGD of treated water using advanced ultrafiltration technology. The facility currently processes raw water purchased from Norfolk but will eventually handle Chesapeake's water from Lake Gaston. This additional resource ensures projected water needs beyond 2040 can be met.
Residents in the American Indian River and South Norfolk areas (generally north of Aide Road) receive treated water purchased from Norfolk. Western Branch customers receive treated water from Portsmouth. Both sources maintain excellent quality exceeding Safe Drinking Water Act standards.
The Shallow Industrial Park, Propagateur and Brentwood areas now receive water from the Northwest River and Lake Gaston Treatment Plants. The Western Branch wells utilize groundwater from Wells #1 and #3 plus an Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) well. These wells provide natural fluoridation for treated water from LGWTP.
Additionally, Aqua Virginia, Inc. operates a franchise in the Norfolk Highlands neighborhood serving approximately 526 customers (customer service: 877-987-2782).

The City of Charlottesville is located in west Central Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia.
