How often is my water tested?

The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) conducts over 1,000 tests daily to ensure water safety before distribution to Garland's storage facilities. The City of Garland collects 150 bacteriological samples monthly from across the distribution system, which are analyzed at the Sunnyvale laboratory. The Texas Commission On Environmental Quality (TCEQ) recognized Garland for outstanding performance during 1997-2001 with zero violations of the "Total Coliform Rule".

What is the hardness of my water?

Garland's water is considered hard, averaging 161 mg/L or 7.0-10.5 grains/gal. Hardness levels fluctuate monthly. The calcium and magnesium salts responsible for hardness don't affect water safety but can impact appliance efficiency.

Why does NTMWD add chlorine to the water?

Chlorine kills harmful bacteria and viruses as a standard disinfectant. NTMWD uses "Chloramines" (chlorine combined with ammonia) for primary disinfection, maintaining a residual for secondary protection throughout the distribution system.

Why does my water look cloudy?

Pressurized distribution systems sometimes cause air to dissolve in water, creating a temporary cloudy appearance at the tap. This doesn't affect water quality. Let the water stand for a few minutes, and the air will naturally dissipate.

What are the white particles coming from my tap?

White particles often indicate calcium carbonate scale from water heaters, especially when set at high temperatures. Regular water heater flushing per manufacturer recommendations can prevent sediment buildup that reduces efficiency. Some water heaters include specialized anodes for different water conditions that can help address odor issues.

What is the pH of Garland's water?

Garland's water pH ranges from 7.6 to 8.3, with an average of 8.0.

Why is my water discolored?

Reddish-brown discoloration typically stems from pipe corrosion either in municipal lines or home plumbing systems, including water heaters. While this water meets health standards, it can stain laundry. Don't heat-dry clothes washed in rust-colored water. Contact Garland at 972-205-3210 for assistance.

Why is fluoride added to the water?

State law (since 1970) requires fluoride addition for dental health. According to the American Dental Association, fluoridated water reduces cavity incidence by 40-50%. Some home filtration systems remove fluoride, and bottled water may vary in fluoride content.
