The sources of tap water include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
To ensure tap water safety, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and California Department of Drinking Water (DDW) establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems.
