About Us
Our water source at CPW comes primarily from Lake Cunningham, supplemented by Pond Robinson situated on the Southerly Tyger River in Northern Greenville Region. These pristine reservoirs span 1,100 miles with an impressive combined capacity exceeding five billion gallons.
No industrial sectors are located above these reservoirs, ensuring cleaner source water. Raw water is pumped directly from Lake Cunningham to our treatment facility north of Greer. We employ conventional treatment methods including chemical mixing, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration to ensure quality standards are met. The purified water then flows through our distribution network to serve our customers.
Beyond providing clean water, Lakes Robinson and Cunningham offer recreational opportunities for community enjoyment. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, fishing, limited boating, and event hosting. Both lakes showcase stunning views of North Greenville's natural landscape. For park hours, boating & fishing permits, or additional information, please contact the Lake Warden's office at (864)895-3645.

OUR MISSION
Our mission is to serve our community by providing safe, high-quality water, natural gas, electric and wastewater services in an environmentally and economically responsible manner aligned with sound business principles. Our skilled staff and dedicated Board of Commissioners work daily to deliver exceptional services to Greer and surrounding areas. Led by our vision to become the leading provider of energy, water, and related services in the Southeast, we remain committed to enhancing quality of life for our customers and community.
HISTORY AND OPERATIONS
The Greer Commission of Public Works (CPW) was chartered in 1913 following a citywide election supporting its establishment. In 1914, CPW began providing electric, wastewater, and water services to Greer. Natural gas service was added in 1957, which now represents our largest customer base. Today, we serve residents and businesses with four utility services in Greer and neighboring communities.
ELECTRIC SERVICE
CPW generated its own electricity until 1927. During the 1930s, we began purchasing power from Southern Utility Company. In the 1970s, The Commission joined the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency – a ten-member operation that owns 25% of Generator II at the Catawba Nuclear Generating Station. Since 1985, CPW has received power from this nuclear generator through PMPA. Currently, our distributed energy is over 95% carbon-free, serving more than 18,800 meters primarily within Greer city limits.
NATURAL GAS
Our largest utility in coverage area is natural gas, serving approximately 22,275 meters across 450 square miles. The service territory extends from southern Spartanburg County to the North Carolina border, including the communities of Duncan, Lyman, Wellford, and Landrum. CPW connects to the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline (Transco) with two gateways for natural gas receipt.
