Gulf Shores Municipal Water Company and EPAGulf Shores Municipal Water Report Information
Gulf Shores maintains its reputation as one of America's premier beach destinations and family-friendly communities. The region's water infrastructure has evolved alongside its development as a coastal haven.
Historical Development:
The completion of the Intracoastal Waterway (1937) and the inauguration of Gulf State Park (1939) significantly transformed the Gulf Shores area, attracting visitors and permanent residents. Before the establishment of the first post office in 1947, the area consisted primarily of a small fishing settlement dating back to the mid-19th century.
Municipal Growth:
Incorporation efforts commenced in 1956, with the Town of Gulf Shores officially recognized by legal authorities in 1958. Initially, the municipality encompassed approximately 206 acres along the Intracoastal Canal, with sections connected by a cantilever bridge.
Tourism and Infrastructure:
By the 1960s, Gulf Shores featured family-owned markets, restaurants, and accommodations catering to summer tourists. The community created events like fishing competitions and the National Shrimp Festival (established 1971) to generate year-round appeal.
Post-Hurricane Development:
After Hurricane Fredric directly impacted Gulf Shores in 1979, construction accelerated with new condominiums, dining establishments, and retail centers. This period marked the transition from town to city status.
Population Dynamics:
The 2000 census recorded 5,044 permanent residents across 2,344 households. The population fluctuates significantly, with summer tourists numbering in the hundreds of thousands and winter "snowbirds" residing temporarily for 3-5 months before returning north.
Economic Transition:
While fishing industries (shrimping, oystering) employed most residents until the 1970s, changing regulations have diminished this livelihood. Tourism and real estate have since become the dominant economic sectors, diversifying the community's lifestyle compared to earlier generations.
