The Grand River (Michigan's largest waterway) along with its tributaries—the Maple, Flat, and Looking Glass rivers—have witnessed the area's transformation from Native American settlements of Chippewa, Pottawatomie, and Ottawa tribes to the arrival of the first European settlers in the 1830s.
