Illinois Water Utility Companies

The City of Joliet obtains its water supply from twenty-one deep bedrock wells (extracting from approximately 1,000 feet below surface) and five shallow gravel wells (drawing from about 80 feet underground) strategically located throughout the city. This groundwater naturally contains minerals including radium, iron, manganese, and fluoride.

To ensure safe drinking water, Joliet has invested in eleven water treatment facilities specifically designed to remove naturally occurring radium. All water distributed in 2017 met both federal and state safety standards. The city employs a Hydrous Manganese Oxide (HMO) treatment process where an HMO chemical is introduced to bind with radium particles. The treatment equipment then filters out this combined material, removing up to 90% of radium along with iron and manganese that can affect water quality.

Before distribution, the water receives a blended orthopolyphosphate treatment for corrosion control, creating a protective barrier between water and metal plumbing in homes and businesses. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is added for disinfection as required by EPA regulations. Though more expensive, this disinfection method represents the safest option for city workers and residents.

The treated water is then pumped through the distribution system to your taps. For more information about the water treatment process or to schedule a tour of the water supply or sewage treatment facilities, please contact the Plant Operations Superintendent at (815) 724-3675.
