Tennessee Water Utility Companies

Lafayette Water Works currently operates two well fields with 14 active wells, each approximately 80 to 100 feet deep. The water is drawn from a substantial pre-glacial valley aquifer filled with sand and gravel deposits from ancient glacier melt. Rainfall and snowmelt naturally replenish this aquifer, maintaining relatively stable water availability.

As water moves through soil and rock formations, it dissolves minerals and naturally-occurring radioactive materials while potentially collecting other substances including contaminants. All municipal water, including bottled varieties, typically contains at least minimal amounts of some impurities. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health hazard.

For detailed information about contaminants and potential health impacts, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Municipal Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Regulatory oversight comes from the U.S. EPA, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), and Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH).

Since the 1970s, water quality regulations have become increasingly comprehensive while testing methods have grown more precise. Modern technology can now detect contaminants at concentrations below 1 part per billion—equivalent to finding one inch in 15,782 miles, one minute in 31.6 years, or one dollar in $10,000,000.

Lafayette Water System Municipal Water Report Info
The EPA requires all municipal water providers to conduct regular water quality testing and publish annual reports that detail contaminant levels, treatment methods, and compliance with federal standards. These reports help residents understand what's in their water and any potential health implications.

Lafayette's water undergoes rigorous testing for over 100 regulated and unregulated contaminants to ensure it meets all safety requirements. While some substances may be detected at trace levels, the EPA sets Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) that define what's considered safe for consumption.
