The Lancaster Water Treatment Plants source their water from wells adjacent to the treatment facilities. The North Plant draws from the Hocking River Valley Aquifer through wells in the Miller Recreation area, while the South Plant extracts from four wells in the same aquifer.

According to Ohio EPA assessments, Lancaster's groundwater source has a high susceptibility to contamination due to known hydrogeological conditions. However, there's currently no evidence that water quality has been compromised. The North Wellfield has provided reliable, clean water since 1932, and the South facility ensures Lancaster's water needs are well-supported.

Like all municipal water, Lancaster's supply may contain trace amounts of some contaminants, though this doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Immune-compromised individuals, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly, and infants may be particularly vulnerable to certain contaminants.

If concerned about lead exposure, residents can minimize risk by flushing taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting. Information about testing is available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline. Certain radioactive minerals in water, including alpha emitters and radium 226/228, may increase cancer risk if consumed above MCL levels over many years.

Lancaster City PWS Municipal Water Report Info

Early Lancaster residents relied on cisterns, shallow wells, and streams for water. The first city water system was likely established around 1879, pumping from the Hocking River. The modern water infrastructure began in 1925 with the Miller Park wellfield construction, water plant, reservoir, and central distribution network.

As Lancaster expanded, so did its water system, which now supplies high-quality water from two treatment plants across seventeen square miles through storage tanks and distribution lines. The system provides excellent fire protection through adequate fire flow capacity and water storage reserves.

Though Lancaster's abundant water source protects against shortages, 21st-century challenges remain, including water quality issues related to nutrients, pathogens, pharmaceuticals, and wellhead protection.
