About Us
Water contaminants come in various forms that affect your household's safety. Microbial contaminants include bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms that may be benign or harmful if they originate from septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife. Heavy metals and inorganic salts might occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or agricultural activities.
Pesticides and herbicides typically come from farming practices and residential lawn care. Radioactive elements occur naturally or result from mining and energy production. Synthetic organic compounds evaporate easily, including petroleum products and cleaning solvents that enter water systems through stormwater runoff.
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. While bottled water follows FDA standards offering similar protections, tap water delivers comparable safety at a fraction of the cost, directly to your home.
Certain populations face greater risks from water contaminants than others. Individuals with compromised immune systems—cancer patients undergoing treatment, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants—may be particularly vulnerable to infections. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. Guidelines for reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

At Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District, water is our central focus. With over 90 years in the water industry, we're committed to delivering both domestic and irrigation water to our customers safely and reliably. Our district serves approximately 18,500 residents, representing about 60% of Lewiston's population (which totaled 30,904 in the 2000 Census).
We manage approximately 7,200 domestic accounts and 5,700 irrigation accounts through two separate water systems—a potable domestic water system and a non-potable pressurized irrigation network. The irrigation system operates via gravity flow from two elevated reservoirs (Soldiers Meadow Reservoir and Lake Waha) through the Sweetwater Canal to Mann Lake (Reservoir A) near Lewiston.
Originally constructed by private developers beginning in 1906, most of the Lewiston Orchards Project infrastructure has since been renovated or modified by the Bureau of Reclamation. While surface water initially supplied domestic needs, today our domestic water comes entirely from groundwater sources developed by the district. We provide complete irrigation service to over 3,900 acres of land and reliable domestic water to approximately 16,000 residents.
