Long Beach Twp Brant Beach Municipal Water Report Info

In 1933, the Township recognized the necessity for beach protection as summer visitors increased, prompting several young men to volunteer as lifeguards. Initially, these early guards worked solely for the prestige, as the beach patrol wasn't yet officially sanctioned by the Township.

By 1936, Long Beach Township formally authorized the Beach Patrol under the Department of Public Safety, led by Mayor Howard E. Schifler and Township Clerk William Penn Lodge. This marked the official beginning of the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol, which would grow significantly in subsequent years.

William J. Noonan, Jr. became the first Captain of the patrol. In 1937, Wilson "Bud" Peck took over as director and, with Mayor Schifler's guidance, sent letters to Township residents requesting $5 contributions to support operations. By 1938, the Beach Patrol had expanded from a small group to 25 fully trained lifeguards, establishing a foundation for community safety that continues today.
