Both tap water and bottled water may originate from groundwater sources (springs, wells) or surface waters (rivers, lakes, reservoirs). As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

We're committed to delivering quality water to our customers. Our water supply combines well water and surface water sources. We operate 9 wells that draw from the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system. Additionally, we purchase 1.5 million gallons of treated surface water daily from Marlboro Township Water Utility Department, sourced from the Delaware and Raritan Canal via Middlesex Water Company. We also obtain 1.5 million gallons of treated surface water daily from Suez Water Matchaponix, drawn from the Matchaponix Brook.

Potential Contaminant Types

• Microbial Contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic Contaminants: Salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and Herbicides: Agricultural sources, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
• Organic Chemical Contaminants: Synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
• Nutrients: Nitrogen and phosphorus compounds that aid growth, both natural and manufactured
• Radioactive Contaminants: Naturally occurring or from oil/gas production and mining activities

• Disinfection By-Product Precursors: Formed when disinfectants (usually chlorine) react with organic material in surface water

To ensure tap water safety, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NJDEP prescribe regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water supplies and requiring monitoring and treatment. Bottled water is similarly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration to provide equal public health protection.
