About Us
Following recent water quality incidents in Flint, Michigan and other communities closer to our region, many Sparta Water Utility customers have expressed growing concerns about water safety and potential lead exposure. Sparta Water Utility manages three separate water systems: Highlands, Lake Mohawk, and Sunset Lake, each supplied by multiple groundwater wells.
All our systems comply with EPA and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulations, including the 1992 Safe Drinking Water Act Lead and Copper Rule and its subsequent amendments. The Sparta Water Utility has invested substantially in distribution system improvements over the years, and importantly, none of our water systems deliver water through lead pipes.
One significant advantage we have is our groundwater sources naturally maintain neutral or slightly alkaline pH levels, which helps prevent corrosion. Additionally, we utilize concentrated liquid phosphate at strategic locations throughout our systems as a corrosion inhibitor to further minimize any lead leaching from household plumbing or fixtures.
Sparta Water Utility regularly conducts testing according to the State's Lead and Copper Rule requirements. Sampling frequency, location selection, and quantity are determined in coordination with NJDEP. We employ state-certified laboratories to ensure proper lead analysis from representative points throughout our distribution network. Testing results are published in our annual water quality reports, which are delivered to each service address and available on our website.

Sparta Township is a thriving community situated in rural Sussex County, New Jersey approximately 45 miles northwest of New York City. Spanning over 38 square miles, the township features rolling hills, pristine lakes, scenic farms, and welcoming residential neighborhoods.
The township boasts 11 private lake communities, with Lake Mohawk being the largest. The Lake Mohawk Boardwalk and Plaza hold significant historical value and are listed on both the State and National Historic Registers.
Sparta was established as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 14, 1845, incorporating portions from Byram Township, Frankford Township, Hardyston Township, and the now-defunct Newton Township. The name "Sparta" was adopted from the already established community, likely referencing Sparta, Greece.
Before European settlement, the Lenape Native Americans inhabited the region. Dutch explorers discovered red mineral deposits around 1750 and attempted copper mining, though these efforts proved unsuccessful. The first permanent European settler, Robert Ogden, arrived in 1778, building his homestead and establishing an iron forge on acquired lands.
The Presbyterian Church, incorporated in 1786, became Sparta's first public building. Educational institutions followed, with schools established in Ogdensburg by 1806 and in Sparta by 1812. For over a century, the local economy relied on iron, zinc, and limestone mining operations. Today, these industrial activities have ceased, and Sparta has transformed into a predominantly residential community supported by retail, professional services, and small businesses.
