This report provides essential information about your water's source, composition, and how it measures up to regulatory standards. It represents a snapshot of last year's water quality assessment. Water Source & Treatment
The Missoula Valley receives water from 40 groundwater wells that tap into the valley's aquifer. This aquifer is naturally replenished by precipitation and snowmelt runoff. To ensure safety, we disinfect water from each well using chlorine. A minimal chlorine residual remains in the water for protection against contamination as it travels through distribution systems to your home. Note that Missoula Water does not add fluoride to the water supply.

Special Health Considerations
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face higher risks from infections. These individuals should seek medical advice about their municipal water consumption. The EPA and CDC provide guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

As required by EPA regulations, Missoula Water (formerly Mountain Water) completed a Source Water Delineation and Assessment report in 2003, last updated in May 2015. This document is available to the public by contacting our office.

Understanding Contaminants
All water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of certain contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities, including:

• Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

Lead in Drinking Water
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing. While Missoula Water is responsible for providing high-quality water, we cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. Monitoring Compliance Notice
Our water system failed to conduct required monitoring for Diethylhexylphthalate, Synthetic Organic Compounds, and Radionuclides during our 2017 sampling schedule. We were required to sample quarterly beginning in the first quarter, but after taking first quarter samples, we missed the second quarter samples due to an oversight. Consequently, we cannot verify water quality during that period. The Department of Environmental Quality has permitted us to restart our quarterly monitoring for these contaminants effective July 1, 2017, and samples are now being collected as required.
