About Us
The 1996 amendments to the Safe Municipal Water Act require utilities to provide customers with an annual "Consumer Confidence Report." This document outlines water sources, content, and the protective measures our testing and treatment protocols address.
Pequannock Township is dedicated to delivering the safest and most reliable water supply possible. We believe informed residents are our greatest allies in maintaining safe water standards. We're proud that Pequannock Township water meets all Federal primary municipal water standards.
Water Resource: The Pequannock Township Water Utility operates three ground wells in the northern Township area near West Parkway and the Boulevard. These wells range from 152 to 196 feet deep. The underground formations producing the water are called aquifers, which collect water primarily from rainfall and snowmelt that filters through the ground.
Our wells draw from the Buried Valley Aquifer, characterized by thick layers of unconsolidated sediments including coarse sand, gravel, and finer soils deposited at the last ice age's conclusion. Besides these wells, Pequannock maintains two interconnections with Newark's water system, which sources from the Pequannock Water Shed supplied by five reservoirs: Charlottenburg, Echo Lake, Canister, Clinton, and Oak Ridge.
These interconnections, located along the aqueduct at Hopper Avenue and Jefferson Street, supplement our supply when needed. During 2017, approximately 41.4% of our distributed water came from the Newark system.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has completed a Source Water Assessment Report for our system, available at www.state.nj.us/dep/swap/ or by contacting NJDEP's Bureau of Safe Drinking Water at (609) 292-5550.

Pequannock Township provides residents with premium quality water that meets or exceeds all Federal and State primary municipal water standards. The Township's primary water source is groundwater from the Buried Valley Aquifer, accessed through three wells in the northern township section. During high-demand periods, the system is supplemented with finished water from two interconnections with Newark's water transmission aqueduct.
The Township operates three wells in its northern region with annual production of approximately 650 MG. Two interconnections at Hopper Avenue and Jefferson Street supplement the groundwater with surface water (comprising 10.27% of annual totals). The distribution system includes 320,000 linear feet of mains and a 1.0 MG backup storage facility at the Greenview Tank, which operates as a pumped storage system.
Water samples are collected by the Health Department and analyzed at certified laboratories. All test results remain on file with the Health Department, along with documentation of test locations and dates. While the water satisfies all primary standards, it exceeds the secondary standard Recommended Upper Limit (RUL) for both hardness and sodium. The Township is investigating methods to reduce hardness and sodium levels in the municipal supply.
The Township currently contracts to provide water to Lincoln Park Borough and Riverdale Borough (in smaller quantities). In addition to purchasing water from Newark during peak demand periods, the Township maintains a contract to purchase water from Riverdale as needed.
