Regional Water Authority
About Us
The 2017 Consumers' Annual Report on Water Quality provides residents with a comprehensive overview of local water quality metrics. Throughout 2017, the Regional Water Authority meticulously collected over 12,000 water samples and performed more than 110,000 tests to ensure high-quality water delivery to Greater New Haven households and businesses.
Test results presented in this report confirm that your municipal water meets or exceeds all quality standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH). It's important to note that all tap water, including bottled varieties, typically contains trace amounts of some contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit EPA.gov/safewater.
Our water supply originates from 12 reservoirs and 3 aquifers. These reservoirs are replenished by streams, while aquifers are natural underground formations saturated with water, typically from rainfall. Over 80% of the municipal water in our district comes from four major reservoir systems (North Branford, Saltonstall, Western River, and Whitney) located across Hamden, Woodbridge, East Haven, Bethany, Guilford, Madison, Killingworth, Branford and North Branford. The remainder comes from wellfields drawing from the Quinnipiac and Mill River aquifers in Cheshire and Hamden, and the Housatonic River aquifer in Derby and Seymour.
Our distribution system features interconnected networks, allowing water from multiple sources to reach various neighborhoods. This strategic mixing not only meets everyday consumption needs, especially during heat waves, but ensures reliable water availability for emergency situations like firefighting.
