Water Source Information

We also purchase water from Suez Water and, during peak summer demand periods, from the Hawthorne Water Department.
Understanding Your Water
All drinking water (both tap and bottled) comes from natural sources including rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals (naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, or agricultural activities)
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum products, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive substances occurring naturally or from oil/gas production and mining
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA and NJDEP establish regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. The FDA sets similar limits for bottled water. EPA/NJDEP standards are typically more stringent than FDA regulations.
All drinking water may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.
