Our Water Source: Roswell draws groundwater from the San Andres basin. We currently operate twenty wells capable of producing 41 million gallons daily, with 24 million gallon storage capacity in our reservoirs.
Water Assessment: Analysis by the New Mexico Environment Department shows our water system is well-maintained with sources properly protected from potential contamination. The overall susceptibility rating is moderately low. The full assessment report is available through the NMED Drinking Water Bureau in Santa Fe.
Understanding Water Contaminants: All water sources (tap and bottled) naturally contain some contaminants. As water flows over land or underground, it dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. Contaminants may include:

Located in Chaves County, Roswell has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 50,000 residents. While known for its extraterrestrial connections, Roswell's true character lies in its welcoming atmosphere for businesses and visitors alike.
The area's settlement history began in 1865 when Missouri pioneers attempted to establish a community 15 miles southwest of present-day Roswell. The settlement, called Missouri Plaza, was abandoned due to water scarcity. Nearby, John Chisum operated his famous Jingle Bob Ranch, once the largest in the United States.
Roswell's official founding came in 1869 when businessman Van C. Smith from Omaha constructed two adobe buildings that served as a general store, post office, and lodging. Smith named the settlement after his father, Roswell Smith, a prominent Indiana attorney. The town remained relatively peaceful during the Lincoln County War (1877-1879).
A significant breakthrough came in 1890 when a major water source was discovered on Richardson Avenue, triggering the area's first major development phase. In 1889, Roswell became the seat of newly-formed Chaves County, with rail service arriving in 1893.
The New Mexico Military Institute, established in 1891, has been instrumental in developing talented individuals including Conrad Hilton, Roger Staubach, and Sam Donaldson. The school contributed significantly to New Mexico achieving statehood in 1912.
During the 1930s, Charles Lindbergh and Harry Guggenheim selected Roswell for Dr. Goddard's rocket experiments. Goddard's groundbreaking work laid crucial foundations for America's space program, earning Roswell recognition as the "Cradle of Space Exploration." This legacy is preserved at the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
World War II brought a POW camp to nearby Orchard Park, with German prisoners helping with infrastructure projects like paving the North Spring River banks. In 1996, a small park displaying this history was renamed POW/MIA Park, featuring a piece of the Berlin Wall donated by the German Air Force.
The controversial 1947 UFO incident has become part of Roswell's modern identity, with the business community embracing tourism related to extraterrestrial interests. After Walker Air Force Base closed in 1967, the city reinvented itself through various industries including arts, tourism, education, healthcare, and media production.
In 2012, Roswell made history again when Felix Baumgartner launched from Roswell Airport for his record-breaking stratospheric jump from 128,100 feet, becoming the first human to break the sound barrier outside a vehicle.
Today, Roswell continues to benefit from its pleasant climate and quality of life, making it an excellent place to live, work, and retire.
