CLCJAWA and the Village of Round Lake maintained full compliance with all water regulations this year.
WATER SOURCE INFORMATION
Our Village purchases water from the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA), an inter-governmental cooperative serving Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, Libertyville, Lindenhurst, Mundelein, Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Park, and Lake County's unincorporated areas including Knollwood, Roundout, Vernon Hills, Wildwood and Grandwood Park.
WATER TREATMENT PROCESS
Water from Lake Michigan undergoes advanced purification at CLCJAWA's Paul M. Neal Water Treatment Facility in Lake Bluff. The process begins with ozone treatment to eliminate organisms and break down contaminants. Next, a coagulant removes sediment and other materials. The clarified water then passes through filters containing activated carbon and crushed sand to remove remaining turbidity.
Turbidity, a measure of water clarity, is continuously monitored by automated equipment and manually tested twice daily in the lab. Ultraviolet light treatment then inactivates any remaining microorganisms. Finally, the filtered water receives chlorine for protection during distribution, fluoride for dental health, and phosphate to prevent metal leaching from household plumbing systems.
CLCJAWA has earned the Excellence in Water Treatment designation for 13 consecutive years. It's the third facility nationwide to achieve this distinction from the Partnership for Safe Water, a voluntary program partly funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that holds participants to standards exceeding current drinking water regulations.

Round Lake Drinking Water Company and EPARound Lake Municipal Water Report Background
In 1901, Armor and Company completed construction of a five-acre ice house in Round Lake that was claimed to be the world's largest at that time. The facility produced approximately 100,000 tons of ice each winter and provided employment for many local residents. Workers extracted around 180 tons of ice from the lake daily. Adjacent to the plant stood a large guest house that accommodated some of the 300 employees working at the ice facility.
A devastating fire destroyed the ice house on August 19, 1917. The facility was never rebuilt as manufacturers had begun producing ice through electric refrigeration technology. The guest house, renovated in 1917, was repurposed as a retreat for women employees from Armor's Chicago operations. It continued functioning as a vacation destination and remained a private retreat called the Oval Lodge until 1928, when Armor and Company sold it to the Alpine Country Club's owners. Today, Alpine Country Club operates as a family-oriented club focusing on bocce, boating, and weekend recreation.
Round Lake owes its existence and development to the forward-thinking efforts of Amarias M. White and associates who recognized the importance of rail transportation. White convinced railroad officials to establish a terminal in Round Lake and donated land for this purpose. The Lake, Cook, and McHenry Counties Railway Company formed in 1899 to construct a section of the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad from Libertyville to Janesville, Wisconsin.
Initially, a station was planned for Hainesville, already a thriving community and the oldest in Lake County. As tracks approached the town, A.C. Goodnow, the railroad company president, negotiated with George B. Battershell, a Hainesville merchant who owned much of the surrounding land. When Battershell refused to lower his asking price, White offered the railroad free land for a station in what is now Round Lake, provided they would develop streets near the station. The agreement was finalized on July 1, 1901.
In 1908, Amarias White, the Amann brothers, Will Rosing, A.J. (Del) Smith, John Hart and others campaigned for incorporation. They submitted incorporation documents to Judge D.L. Jones in Waukegan on November 19, 1908. Judge Jones ordered an election held at Paddock's Hardware Store on December 9, 1908, resulting in 51 votes for and 15 against incorporation. A subsequent election on January 7, 1909 unanimously chose Amarias White as town president, with Walter White, S.C. Litwiler, Edward Hendee, Martin Thelen, Edward Luby, and Frank Amann serving as trustees. The first board meeting took place on February 6, 1909.

Round Lake Drinking Water Company and CDC-
Where does our water come from?
EAWA draws water from multiple sources. As of 2011, surface water comprises 25% of total production, sourced from Back Run tributary, which is supplemented during dry periods with flow from Conewago Creek, which itself receives augmentation from Cornwall Quarry. This water passes through the Authority's filtration plant at 211 West Hummelstown St. The remaining 75% comes from seven deep wells. Treatment occurs at the well sites before water enters the distribution system. -
Why are my bills higher than my neighbors?
Water usage patterns vary significantly between households. Some residents run dishwashers daily, use older washing machines, take extended showers, have plumbing leaks, or water lawns and gardens frequently. All these activities contribute to higher consumption and bills. -
What is an EDU?
An "Equivalent Dwelling Unit" serves as a capacity planning metric. One EDU equals approximately 170 gallons of water per day. -
What payment methods does the Authority accept?
The Authority accepts cash, checks, and money orders at their office. Online payments can be made with MasterCard, Visa, Discover cards and electronic checks through the "Pay Bill" tab on the website. The Authority also offers free automatic bank drafts from checking or savings accounts – contact the office to complete the necessary enrollment form.
