The Sanford Water District operates nine groundwater sources throughout the City of Sanford. All water comes from sand and gravel aquifers carefully mapped with 200-day and 2,500-day travel time zones. These protected areas are documented in the City's Zoning Ordinance (Article 16 of Chapter 280-15-1), available at the District office.

The District supplies approximately 1.8 million gallons daily to meet community needs. The Maine Department of Human Services completed a Source Water Assessment in 2003, rating the wells at Moderate risk based on aquifer type and geology. Current protection from contamination is rated Low to Average, while future risk is Moderate to High. The District is considering additional land acquisition near wells to reduce contamination risks.

Water Treatment includes:

  • Hypochlorite addition for chlorine residuals
  • Fluorosilicic acid (maintaining 0.5-1.2 mg/L, optimal 0.7 mg/L) for dental health
  • Sodium hydroxide to reduce corrosion and raise pH
  • Phosphate at Main Station to minimize iron and manganese discoloration

The District maintains comprehensive quality monitoring with weekly bacteria, fluoride and chlorine testing, regular organic/inorganic sampling, continuous pH monitoring, and specific schedules for radionuclides, copper, lead, and other parameters.

Source water contaminants may include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment, septic systems, and wildlife
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, storm runoff, and residential use
  • Inorganic contaminants from natural sources, runoff, and industrial processes
  • Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, and urban runoff
  • Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or mining operations

Sanford Water District Municipal Water Report Info

The Sanford Water District serves the City of Sanford (including Springvale Village) as a Quasi-Municipal entity governed by a three-member board of trustees. While the District historically pumped an average of 2.6 million gallons daily with summer peaks reaching 3.5 million gallons, recent usage has declined to just under 2 million gallons per day.

The system supports approximately 6,000 service connections through nine groundwater wells strategically positioned throughout Sanford. The District's mission is delivering safe, high-quality, and affordable water to Sanford and Springvale residents.

Trustee meetings typically occur at 4:00 PM on the second Tuesday monthly at the District office (243 River Street). Those wishing to attend should verify meeting status by calling the District, as schedules may change. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19th, 2019, at 4:00 PM at the District headquarters.
