Savannah-Wilmington Island Municipal Water Company and CDCCommon Water Quality Questions
Why is my water discolored?
Rusty, yellowish, or brownish water typically results from iron or rust presence. This commonly occurs during distribution system disruptions (like water main breaks) or changes in water flow direction (such as during fire hydrant use or routine hydrant flushing). Internal plumbing issues can also cause discoloration. Rust problems are usually temporary—we recommend avoiding laundry when water appears discolored to prevent clothing stains. After water clears, flush both cold and hot water taps to eliminate rust from your plumbing.
Why does my water appear milky?
Cold water contains more dissolved air, especially during winter months. As this cold water enters your home and warms up, air is released, creating a milky or cloudy appearance. When you fill a glass, these air bubbles release (similar to a shaken soda). The water will gradually clear from bottom to top as it sits. This air is harmless—the more air present, the cloudier the appearance and longer the clearing time.
What causes reddish-orange slime in my bathroom fixtures?
This slime typically comes from bacteria that thrive in consistently moist areas with available nutrients. These bacteria can originate from air, soil, water, or household surfaces. While many bacteria appear orange or pink, Serratia marcescens is often responsible for the distinctive "orangy/red" deposits. These persistent bacteria require regular cleaning followed by disinfection with chlorine-based cleaners for effective control.
What are the black particles in my water?
Black particles resembling coffee grounds often come from deteriorating carbon filter cartridges—if detected, replace the cartridge promptly. Black specks may also result from degrading faucet washers, gaskets, or disintegrating black rubber liners inside stainless steel flexible hoses used in plumbing connections. Replace affected washers, gaskets, or hoses with alternatives that don't contain black rubber liners.
Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?
Sulfur-like or sewage odors when running water usually originate from gases in the sink drain rather than the water itself. Bacteria living in drains feed on food, soap, hair, and other materials, producing gases released when water flows. To verify the source, fill a glass with water and move away from the sink—if the smell dissipates, the drain is the culprit. Regular drain cleaning is the recommended solution.
