CROSS POND serves as the primary source of Shreveport's municipal water. The Cross Pond Watershed (the area drained by streams flowing to the lake) spans 260 square kilometers, with approximately two-thirds located in Caddo Parish and one-third in Harrison County, Texas. While most of the watershed consists of undeveloped timberland, a significant portion includes urban and suburban properties within city limits.

During dry periods, Cross Lake receives supplemental water pumped from 12 Mile Bayou. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality conducted a source water assessment in September 2002, giving the water supply a high susceptibility rating. PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATION: The EPA requires public water systems to include specific language in their water quality reports. All water sources (both tap and bottled) contain naturally-occurring minerals and substances absorbed from surrounding land and activities. Untreated water may contain biological contaminants (viruses/bacteria), inorganic substances (salts/metals), pesticides/herbicides, and industrial chemicals from petroleum use.

The EPA establishes limits for contaminants in public water systems, while FDA regulations set standards for bottled water. All water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Some individuals may be particularly vulnerable to water contaminants, including immunocompromised persons (cancer patients undergoing treatment, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants). These groups should seek guidance from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption. EPA/CDC guidelines for reducing Cryptosporidium infection risk are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.

Important notes about water testing:

  • Tests were conducted on numerous regulated substances; only those listed were detected
  • Turbidity measures water clarity and indicates filtration effectiveness
  • Lead and copper analyses occur every three years; 2016 results are shown
  • Some contaminants are monitored less frequently as their concentrations rarely change
  • Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children

Lead primarily enters drinking water from service line materials and home plumbing components. While Shreveport Water System provides high-quality water, it cannot control plumbing materials used in homes. If your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for cooking or drinking. Historical Background
Shreveport, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a partnership formed to develop a settlement at the intersection of the newly navigable Red River and the Texas Trail. This overland route connected to the Republic of Texas and previously to Mexico. Captain Henry Miller Shreve, commanding the US Army Corps of Engineers, had cleared a 180-mile long logjam that had obstructed the river since ancient times. The town was named in his honor, and on March 20, 1839, Shreve Town was incorporated as Shreveport.

Municipal Development
Shreveport was incorporated as a city in 1871. The original boundaries encompassed land acquired from the Caddo Indians in 1835. When Caddo Parish was created from Natchitoches Parish in 1838, Shreveport became the parish seat and remains so today. The original town consisted of 64 city blocks divided by eight streets running west from the Red River and eight streets running south from Cross Bayou, a Red River tributary. This historic 64-block area now serves as the central business district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historical Significance
Shreveport and neighboring Bossier City (founded 1884, incorporated 1907) feature six major districts and numerous landmarks on the National Register. Shreveport ranks second only to New Orleans among Louisiana cities with multiple historic sites. A notable example is the McNeill Street Pumping Station, a waterworks built in 1887 that remains operational and is the only one of its kind in the nation, earning designation as a National Historic Landmark.

Transportation Evolution
The Red River, opened by Captain Shreve in the 1830s, remained navigable until 1914 when railroad transportation's rise led to neglect and silting. Navigation to Shreveport wasn't restored until the 1990s. Today, the port of Shreveport-Bossier City is again developing as a transportation hub. The area is also home to Barksdale Army Air Field, established in 1933, which is itself a national landmark.
